Edge Telecom data extension services (DES) enables you to extend your network reach in London and various cities across the UK, so that you can reduce your total cost of ownership and increase efficiency.

The Edge DES portfolio has been designed for ISP and telecommunication service providers alike, who need high bandwidth connectivity in the ‘last mile’ to connect their customers to their existing core network. Edge Telecom provides a non-contended circuit to the end-customer’s premises, starting at 2Mbps and going up to 40Mbps. Edge Telecom has deployed E.F.M. (Ethernet in the First Mile) technology on top of its LLU copper circuits. This enables pure Ethernet to the customer premises over copper pairs and with pair bonding provides true high speed LAN extensions products. This technology offers customers three clear advantages over traditional tail circuits:

1. Fast Installation: High bandwidth circuits can provisioned quickly because circuits use standard BT copper pairs.
2. Low Installation costs: Running over standard copper pairs minimizes installation costs.
3. Built in Redundancy: If one bonded copper pair fails the remaining pairs continue to provide service, albeit at a reduced capacity while the fault is corrected.

Carriers and ISPs can connect to the Edge Telecom network through a 100Mb or 1Gb network to network interface (NNI) port at either Telehouse North or CityLifeLine. From the NNI port Edge Telecom can provision:

• Point-to-point circuits
• Tail circuits to connect your end-customer to your network.
• Internet transit circuits.

Internet and Hosting Services

Edge Telecom Internet services

The Edge Internet portfolio has been designed for resellers who need to connect their customers or content to our fast, congestion-free and flexible backbone. Access is via a non-contended circuit to the end-customer’s premises starting at 2Mbps and going up to 40Mbps underpinned by a robust service level agreement and domain name services.

All transit bandwidth is multi homed across 3 Tier 1 ISPs with full connectivity and peering at LINX and LIPEX. In addition Edge Telecom maintains numerous peering agreements with other ISPs.  Multiple redundancy BGP insures that in the event of an upstream provider suffering network failure, all our customers in and outbound traffic will be rerouted via the other peers in our network. All London customers are connected via dual redundant POPs insuring that in the event of failure on the Edge Telecom network the customer’s Internet connection will remain active.

All Internet products are completely non-contended within the Edge Telecom backbone and in transit to the Internet.  Edge proactively monitors the customer router and notifies the designated reseller contact via SMS or email in the event of non-response. Similarly notification that the service has been restored can be sent in the same way.

Edge will supply resellers with a preconfigured router. The reseller can chose either to send an engineer to their customer site to turn up service or to send the router by post for the customer to plug and play.

Quality of service

With Edge DES products, customers benefit from guaranteed bandwidth that enables prioritization of data on their network, ensuring that delay-sensitive data is delivered in an uninterrupted flow to maintain voice or video quality. All equipment is supplied from marker leaders such as Cisco and teamed with Edge’s world class installation and maintenance support services.

Resilience

Edge can provision your circuits with or without protection (subject to circuit speed, location and service). Protected circuits are provided as two separate paths to your site. All DES circuits that are provided via Ethernet over our network are automatically protected by the ring resilience and self-healing properties of our network. In the unlikely event that the primary link fails, your traffic is automatically switched over to the second link. The cut-over is enabled by a hot standby protection card in the Edge terminating equipment at both ends of the circuit. Cut-over time is less than 50ms.

Technical platforms

Edge DES products run over a core Cisco backbone and are delivered over the Zhone MALC platform that supports a full range of copper and fiber technologies as well as full-featured support for VoIP, data and video services. Zhone routers will be installed in the customer site at the end of each link supporting data, VoIP and video as well as a full range of QOS and class of service (COS)

Security

Edge DES products are Layer-2-tunnelled, so it is impossible for another Edge customer to use their own access to intercept data traveling between your sites or to send data to or from your sites. Edge Telecom’s own premises are highly secure, with entry controlled by an electronic access control system to ensure that only authorized personnel can gain entry. Data traffic will not pass over the public Internet.

Extended coverage

Edge DES products can also be provided to customer sites not directly connected to the Edge network, using a mixture of Edge Telecom and third-party other licensed operator (OLO) infrastructure and services. These are integrated seamlessly and provide numerous customer benefits such as simplified management and provisioning, network transparency and single point of contact.
